I love to be entertained
when you grow up in the company of your own solitude, there are many routes you can take to keep yourself entertained. fortunately, I have always been a girl with an eye for glamour, and what is more glamorous than the movies? dramatic storylines, costume changes, hair, makeup, and beautiful people experiencing beautiful problems on a screen have always captivated me. when there was no one around to raise me, I had the television by my side to teach me.
the point is, I love film. I love television. I love music. I love fashion. I love all things that encompass the entertainment industry. so, what is a girl to do now in 2023 when the industry she loves so dearly has been on a halt for the past six months? As we approach September, the beginning of the end of this year, Hollywood has been on strike for officially six months. The WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes of April/May 2023 may not have seemed to affect society greatly at first, but as we approach the final quarter of the year, the way we engage with content will change for the worse.
In August of 2023, we witnessed some of the most anticipated films and television shows of the year be postponed to 2024 or even later. One of the most anticipated films of the year, Dune 2, starring Timothee Chalamet and Zendaya, had a release date of November 2023 before being postponed to 2024. Another one of Zendaya’s films, Challengers, released its trailer just before the SAG-AFTRA strike began, and has since been pushed back until next year after rumors speculated it was to be revealed to critics at the Cannes Film Festival of 2023. Lastly, the television show Euphoria, starring Zendaya, has been postponed until possibly 2025, three years after its last season premiered in 2022.
These highly anticipated films and television shows are being postponed despite already being filmed and ready because actors involved in SAG-AFTRA are banned from promotional engagements. So, not only are the producers, directors, actors, and movie theatres and/or streaming services being affected, but so are hair and makeup artists, wardrobe and stylists, fashion houses, journalists, and even theme parks.
Via a tweet (post) made by @AndrewJ626 on Twitter (X), a flyer was shared from the WGA bringing awareness to the strikes and their effect on the theme park, Universal Studios, which is also one of the studios refusing to pay its writers and actors fairly and letting Hollywood crumble.
An informative video that has influenced my thoughts tonight was uploaded by @samvicchiollo on Tik Tok who has put in plain, simple terms what the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes mean to regular civilians like us.
As we approach the next few months, I will be preparing for this holiday season to be “pretty damn dull (Vicchiollo, 2023).” If there are no new holiday specials to look forward to or any new films coming out on Christmas Day, how much longer are we to continue romanticizing re-runs of twenty-year-old television sitcoms on streaming services?
Dear Hollywood, please pay your writers and your actors fairly. The world needs your glamour. I need your glamour.
i love movies so much i love the power of film and how they affect me and everyone and different genres and their beauty and different opinions and different cinematography techniques and colour palettes and good acting and interesting story and relatable characters and well written characters and good characterization and drama and good writing and tight direction and oh my god i’m so emotional i love film so much
im like if a girl was born to be in a band but without the talent ambition or music knowledge
